Generator Transfer Switches

A generator transfer switch safely connects a portable or standby generator to your home, preventing dangerous backfeed to the grid. Horizon Electric NW installs code-compliant transfer switches and inlets as planned, permitted work across Woodinville and the Eastside.

Backup power, done safely

Winter storms take Puget Sound Energy power down across the Eastside every year, and hillside neighborhoods tend to stay dark longest. A transfer switch or interlock lets a generator power your home without backfeeding the utility line — a serious hazard for line crews and your equipment. We install inlet boxes and interlocks for portable units and transfer switches for whole-home standby generators, all to current NEC backfeed-protection rules.

Planned and permitted

This is scheduled, permitted work planned ahead of the next outage. We size the switch to the loads you want to keep running, install and inspect it, and walk you through operating it so you are ready when the power goes out.

Our process

  1. 1

    Assess

We assess the existing system and run any load calculation the job requires.

  2. 2

    Scope & quote

We scope the work to current code and give you a clear written quote.

  3. 3

    Permit & perform

We pull the required electrical permit and complete the work to NEC 2023 and Washington WAC 296-46B standards.

  4. 4

    Inspect

We carry the job through final inspection so it is documented for insurers and future buyers.

Frequently asked questions

+
Do I need a transfer switch for a generator?
Yes — connecting a generator without a proper transfer switch or interlock risks backfeeding the grid, which is unsafe and against code. The switch is what makes generator use safe and legal.
+
Portable or whole-home standby?
Both work — a portable generator with an inlet and interlock is the budget path; a standby unit with an automatic transfer switch runs essential circuits hands-free. We size either to the loads you want to keep on.
